Developing Civic-Minded University Graduates
One of the key aims of the Global Citizenship Programme (GCP) is to produce student graduates who are aware and interested in tackling some of the vast and complex challenges facing South Africa and the world today. Dr Janice McMillan, Director of the Programme, last year wrote a piece for University World News on the need for universities to actively develop students as active, critical, and civic-minded graduates. This, she says, can be achieved by universities rethinking learning and teaching practices:
“We need teaching and learning that engages the student not only as an emergent professional but also as a committed, thoughtful and civic-minded young citizen. This means rethinking pedagogy and the complex relationship between knowledge, skills and values.”
