Screening: Paris is Burning
Join us for a screening and discussion of Jennie Livingston's acclaimed documentary Paris Is Burning (1990), which chronicles the ball culture among drag artists living in New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Using this film as a starting-point, we will unpack some of the following questions: How do categories like race and class intersect with categories like gender and sexuality? Does queerness copy or challenge mainstream expressions of gender and sexuality? What are the limits and possibilities of gender subversion? And how does gender and sexuality play out in debates around citizenship, belonging, and the distribution of rights and resources? Wednesday, February 28th in Leslie Social ID at 4pm!
